Rural Murals

Tres Taylor, a Birmingham artist, has a vision.  He sees a route of murals papering the rural landscape of Alabama’s richest communities. While this area, the Black Belt, have some of the poorest counties in the country; it is one of the richest in culture.  These murals will express this in a big way.  The murals will be created by the children of the area partnered with professional artists and will capture the pure joy of childhood as well as highlight artistic talent.  This route of Rural Murals will have an economic impact on the area too.  By encouraging an audience to visit this area to see the murals, visitors will have the opportunity to see much more, and to patronize the area’s merchants, restaurants, hotels, and possibly generate entrepreneurships.  This community art project is proposed to paint murals throughout the region touching the hands and lives of children, while enriching the communities with the experience of art.

The Taylors believe in the arts as a way to affect society and create economic growth as well as social change.

Current Status:

The Taylors painted with 117 children in Marion, Alabama in May, 2007.  The children painted self-portraits on tarpaper with colorful house paints.  Tres will design and complete the mural using the children’s art.
